Reframing “Witness”

During my chaplain training through CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education), I got the unique chance to use my skills as a first responder to match with a hospital-based EMS program and serve as chaplain for 911 EMS and critical care hospital transport. Within the first month of training, I found myself on the scene of a firefighter killed in the line of duty. Struggling to know how to minister in the situation, among all the noise of other religious persons on scene quoting scripture to fill times of silence, I realized I was able to offer a different witness—being present in the moment— viewing all the sights and sounds going on as care and final rituals were being done, and holding the emotions of the first responders so they could courageously finish out their job in the moment. In a time when no words are sufficient to make it better, I was there to say, I am present, I see you as you go through this difficult journey, and I am here to walk beside you.

If you asked people what I did as an EMS chaplain, most of them think I was there to save souls, to make sure the Bible was quoted, and the sinner's prayer was shared as someone was taking their last breath. But by redefining witness—being present and walking alongside, even if just for a few moments. The presence of God could provide the healing someone needs in the moment and those to come.

This week we have the special opportunity to highlight our chaplains and spiritual care providers during Spiritual Care Week. Here in NC, we have over 50 Baptist Women serving all throughout the state serving in various types of ministries, some hospital, university, first responder, and many more. As the theme this year highlights, our chaplains provide “Healing through presence and grace.” We at BWIM NC are so grateful for these chaplains and celebrate with you. We hope all of you will check out our special video series sharing a few of their stories this week on our social media outlets and share it with others. If you are a female chaplain serving, we would love to connect more with you, hear your story, and see how we can walk alongside you in your ministry. If this week leads you with a stirring from God about how chaplaincy may be for you, we would love to continue the conversation and provide you with resources you need.

Thank you for answering God’s call to walk alongside those who need healing through presence and grace!
